Fritz Kreisler one of the greatest violinists of all time

On my walk at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, I discovered the family mausoleum of the great violinist, Fritz Kreisler.

The Austrian-American virtuoso was one of the most celebrated violinists of his era, widely regarded as one of the greatest of all-time. His rich tone, lyrical phrasing, and unmistakable warmth made his playing instantly recognizable.

Kreisler had already earned the highest honour from both the Vienna and Paris Conservatories before the age of 14 and was considered by many to be the musical reincarnation of Paganini.

In 1941, while crossing a New York City street, Fritz was struck by a truck. The accident left him with a fractured skull and in a coma for several days. Though he survived, the injuries significantly impaired his ability to perform for the rest of his life.

Fritz Kreisler died in New York on January 29, 1962, at the age of 86.
