Bill Masterton First NHL player to die in a game

On my walk at Green Acres Cemetery, Winnipeg with puck and stick in hand, I visited the grave of Bill Masterton.

Masterton is the only player in NHL history to die as a direct result of injuries suffered during a game following a collision at centre ice on January 13, 1968 against the now defunct Oakland Seals in the Twin City.

Masterton’s death sparked a long-running debate in hockey about the merits of wearing helmets.

After the 1968 season, many will know that The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy was created in his memory. Awarded annually to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance and sportsmanship.

Sadly, Bill Masterton was only 29.
