On My Walk: Remembering Corey Haim

While walking through Pardes Shalom Cemetery in Vaughan, Ontario, in search of Honest Ed Mirvish’s grave, I came upon the final resting place of Corey Haim, the talented actor who stole hearts in the 1980s and became a pop culture icon far too soon.

Corey was born in Toronto and raised in Willowdale, where his mother enrolled him in drama classes in improvisation and mime to help him overcome his shyness. That early encouragement set the stage for a remarkable—if tragically short—career in Hollywood.

His breakout role came in 1986 when he starred in Lucas alongside Kerri Green, Charlie Sheen, and Winona Ryder. While he turned down a role in Stand By Me (eventually played by River Phoenix), Corey said he never regretted the decision—Lucas had given him his own spotlight.

Then came The Lost Boys (1987), a film that defined an era and secured his place in cinema history. It was on that set he met Corey Feldman, and the two quickly became known as “The Two Coreys,” a duo that dominated teen screens throughout the decade and became the highest-paid teen actors of the time.

Sadly, the pressures of fame came at a cost. After years of personal struggles, Corey Haim passed away on March 10, 2010, in Burbank, California. He was just 38 years old.

His private funeral was held six days later just north of Toronto, attended by family and close friends who remembered the boy from Willowdale who rose to stardom and captured the hearts of a generation.
