On My Walk: Remembering Guitar Legend Domenic Troiano
On a quiet walk through Forest Lawn Mausoleum in Toronto, I came across the crypt of one of Canada’s greatest guitarists and music icons—Domenic (Donnie) Troiano.
Born in Modugno, near the city of Bari in southern Italy, Domenic and his family emigrated to Toronto, settling in the Greenwood and Danforth neighborhood. It was here that Domenic’s deep love for music began to take shape.
In the early 1960s, Troiano joined Ronnie Hawkins’ band, gaining invaluable exposure and learning from some of the best local and touring musicians. This pivotal experience led to the formation of the legendary R&B/soul group Mandala. With several Top 40 hits, Mandala made waves across North America and headlined iconic venues like Whiskey a Go Go in Los Angeles.
In the 1970s, Domenic continued his musical journey by forming the band Bush and recording with Randy Bachman.
His major breakthrough came when he replaced Joe Walsh in The James Gang in 1971, further cementing his reputation as a world-class guitarist with unforgettable riffs and a signature sound.
In 1974, The Guess Who came calling. Domenic joined as lead guitarist and songwriter, working closely with Burton Cummings. He also had the distinction of being the first member of the band not from Winnipeg. His time with The Guess Who brought a new era of sound and creativity to the group.
After the band disbanded, Troiano formed The Domenic Troiano Band, performing globally until 1980. Over his career, he also composed for television and recorded several solo albums, continuing to influence the Canadian music scene.
In 1996, Domenic Troiano was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, a well-deserved recognition of his enduring legacy and contributions to rock, soul, and blues music in Canada and beyond.
