Remembering Frank Bazos and the Legacy of Becker’s Milk

On my walk through Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto, clutching my original Becker’s milk crate, I came across the grave of Frank Bazos, the founder of the iconic Becker’s Milk empire.Frank built a dairy and convenience store chain that became a beloved part of everyday life in Toronto and beyond. The original Becker Milk Company was founded in 1957, starting small but eventually growing from 5 stores to an impressive 500 locations.

Becker’s milk — especially their chocolate milk, served ice-cold — holds a special place in many hearts. I can personally vouch for it being the best. In fact, the legendary rock band Rush even gave a shout-out to Becker’s Chocolate Milk in the “Special Thanks” section on several of their albums. Now that’s a stamp of approval!

The Becker’s brand saw a rebirth in November 2013 when an Oakville Mac’s convenience store was converted back to the Becker’s banner. I might just have to make a stop there soon — for a nostalgic sip of that classic chocolate milk.

On my recent visit to downtown Oakville, I visited the few remaining Becker’s on Lakeshore Road.

Frank Bazos died in Toronto in 1994. His age some would say was between 92-93.
