George Knudson 1969 Masters Tournament runner-up

On my walk at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto — just ahead of the Canadian Open — I discovered the grave of one of Canada’s golf legends, George Knudson.

Knudson was a towering figure in Canadian golf and a formidable presence on the PGA Tour. For many years, he shared the record for most PGA Tour wins by a Canadian (eight), alongside Mike Weir. That mark has since been surpassed by Brooke Henderson, the LPGA superstar, who continues to build on her historic career.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, George moved to Toronto in 1958, where he would continue to refine what many considered one of the most beautiful and technically sound swings in the game. His effortless rhythm made him a model for aspiring golfers across North America.

George’s best finish in a major came at the 1969 Masters Tournament, where he tied for second place, narrowly missing the coveted green jacket. That year’s tournament was won by George Archer, with Billy Casper and Tom Weiskopf also in contention.

Sadly, Knudson’s life was cut short. He passed away in Toronto on January 24, 1989, at just 51 years old.
