Remembering Gino Empry — Toronto’s Legendary “Mr. Entertainment”

On a walk through Prospect Cemetery in Toronto, I discovered the grave of one of Canada’s greatest impresarios, Gino Emperatori, better known by his professional name, Gino Empry — a true titan behind the scenes of Toronto’s vibrant cultural life.

Born and raised in the Dufferin and Davenport neighbourhood, young Gino’s journey began as an actor. But it was his knack for spotting talent and orchestrating unforgettable performances that would ultimately define his legacy.

Empry’s big break came when he started booking acts for the legendary Ed Mirvish at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. His success there paved the way to the Imperial Room at the Royal York Hotel, where he spent the next 19 years booking entertainment that would captivate audiences night after night.

Over his decades-long career, Gino seamlessly transitioned from booking agent to promoter, manager, and confidant to a stellar roster of Canadian and international stars. His clients included luminaries like Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee, Cher, Peter O’Toole, Ella Fitzgerald, Karen Kain, Ann Murray — the list reads like a who’s who of the performing arts.

His impact went beyond individual stars. As former Toronto mayor David Miller said, “He was an innovator as well as an impresario, and his role in the evolution of Toronto as a global cultural center will never be forgotten.”

Gino Empry died in Toronto on October 14, 2006, he was 83.
