NHL legend, Glenn “Swampy” Brydson and son-in law of Lord Roy Thomson

On my walk through Park Lawn Cemetery in west-end Toronto, I stopped by the grave of NHL veteran Glenn Brydson — who was, for a time, the brother-in-law of Kenneth Thomson, Canada’s richest man.

Glenn (spelled “Glen” on his hockey card) was born in the nearby Swansea neighbourhood, just minutes from the cemetery where he now rests. Brydson enjoyed an eight-year NHL career, playing for the Montreal Maroons, St. Louis Eagles, New York Rangers, and Chicago Black Hawks. He was the younger brother of Gord Brydson, a noted Toronto golfer who also briefly played with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Brydson was traded from the New York Rangers to the Chicago Black Hawks in exchange for legendary player Howie Morenz in 1936.

After hanging up his skates in 1942, right in the midst of the Second World War, the man nicknamed “Swampy” settled in Toronto and entered the hotel business.

Glenn Brydson died in Halton Hills, Ontario on December 9, 1993. He was 83.
