J.E.H. MacDonald: Visionary Artist and Champion of Canadian Art

On a very damp walk through Prospect Cemetery in Toronto, I sought out the grave of one of Canada’s most cherished artists, J.E.H. MacDonald. As a co-founder of the iconic Group of Seven alongside Lawren Harris, MacDonald’s influence extends far beyond his own stunning landscapes.

Not only was he a founding member of the group that defined Canadian art, but he also played a pivotal role in encouraging Tom Thomson to take up painting—a legacy that continues to inspire generations, even though Thomson was never officially a member of the Group.

James Edward Hervey MacDonald passed away in Toronto on November 26, 1932, at the age of 59.

1873-1932
