Neshan Krekorian: Titanic Survivor, Canadian Immigrant

On a quiet walk through Victoria Lawn Cemetery in St. Catharines, Ontario, I came across the grave of Neshan Krekorian, an Armenian-born survivor of the RMS Titanic—a man whose life was forever marked by one of the most infamous maritime disasters in history.

On the early morning of April 15, 1912, as the Titanic struck an iceberg and chaos spread through the decks, “Nesh” managed to fight his way up to A-Deck. As Lifeboat 10 was being lowered into the frigid North Atlantic, he made a desperate leap—and landed safely inside. That single moment would define the rest of his life.

Though he survived the sinking, Krekorian developed pneumonia and was hospitalized upon arrival in New York City. After finally reaching his intended destination in Brantford, Ontario, he was hospitalized again for several weeks to recover.

By 1918, Krekorian had settled in St. Catharines, where he built a new life. He married, raised a family, and worked his entire career at General Motors—quietly contributing to his community, never far removed from the memory of the night he cheated death aboard the Titanic.
