Stanley Thompson Canada’s greatest golf course architect
On my walk through Mount Hope Cemetery in Kitchener-Waterloo—with my sand wedge in hand—I discovered the grave of Stanley Thompson, one of the greatest golf course architects the world has ever known.
Born in Toronto to Scottish-born parents, Thompson attended Malvern Collegiate before enrolling at the Ontario Agricultural College (now the University of Guelph). Alongside his four brothers—also outstanding golfers—he honed his skills caddying at the Toronto Golf Club, where their lifelong passion for the game took root.
From 1912 to 1952, Thompson would go on to design over 150 courses, primarily in Canada, with a philosophy grounded in preserving the natural contours and flow of the land. His work wasn’t about imposing form—it was about revealing the beauty already there.
Among his masterpieces are Banff Springs Golf Course (1927), Jasper Park Lodge, Fundy National Park Golf Course, Green Gables in Prince Edward Island, and the iconic Highlands Links in Cape Breton. Banff and Jasper in particular helped earn Thompson an international reputation for excellence.

His talents were also sought after by private clubs. His fingerprints can be found on courses like Oakdale Golf & Country Club (host of the 2023 Canadian Open), St. George’s Golf Club (1929), Islington Golf Club (1923), and Oshawa Golf Club, which he re-designed after learning from his mentor, George Cumming. And the list goes on—each course a blend of artistry, terrain, and competitive challenge.
Not just a designer, Thompson was also a gifted player, winning numerous Canadian amateur tournaments. In 1948, at the height of his career, he co-founded the American Society of Golf Course Architects alongside a young protégé, Robert Trent Jones, who would carry the Thompson legacy far into the future.
Sadly, as Stanley Thompson was leaving to design a course in South America he died suddenly in Toronto on January 4, 1953. He was 59.
