Trump buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto

On a recent walk through Mount Pleasant Cemetery, I came across something I had never seen before in all my travels: a monument bearing the surname “Trump.”

At first glance, the name immediately brings to mind Donald Trump. But the family buried here belongs to an entirely different lineage.

Lydia Trump (née Lydia Anne Smith) was born around 1846 in England and later immigrated to Canada. She married Daniel Trump, a Toronto labourer, and the couple lived in the Yorkville/Deer Park area—then a developing edge of the city rather than the upscale neighborhood it is today.

Together, they raised several children:

• William Daniel Trump (born c. 1869)

• Charles Trump (born c. 1871)

• Elizabeth Trump (born c. 1872)

• Frederick Trump (born c. 1880)

Notably, this Frederick Trump shares a name with the grandfather (born in Kallstadt, Germany) of Donald Trump, but he was a different individual, born and raised in Ontario with no known connection to the American family.

Interestingly, the surname “Trump” remains extremely rare in Canada today, with only about 143 individuals bearing the name nationwide.
