While walking through Notre-Dame Catholic Cemetery in Ottawa, I came upon the final resting place of one of the world’s most celebrated photographers—Yousuf Karsh. His grave is marked by a distinctive and dignified monument, a fitting tribute to the artist who immortalized many of the 20th century’s most influential figures.

A Journey from Tragedy to Triumph

Born in 1908 in what is now Turkey, Yousuf Karsh survived the horrors of the Armenian Genocide as a child—an experience that would profoundly shape his worldview. At the age of fourteen, his family sent him to Canada to live with his uncle, George Nakash, a photographer who first introduced him to the craft.

Karsh later refined his skills in the United States before returning to Ottawa, where he opened his own studio. It was in Canada’s capital that his career flourished, and where he would create portraits that defined an era.

Master of Light and Shadow

Karsh’s photography is renowned for its dramatic use of light and shadow, producing portraits of remarkable emotional depth and cinematic presence. His ability to reveal character through illumination and composition resulted in some of the most iconic images of the 20th century, including portraits of Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, and Marilyn Monroe.

A Life Well Lived

Yousuf Karsh passed away in Boston, Massachusetts, on July 13, 2002, at the age of 93. His artistic vision continues to influence generations of photographers, and his resting place in Ottawa stands as a quiet yet powerful testament to a life defined by resilience, creativity, and mastery.

Interred alongside him is his wife, Solange Gauthier Karsh, who worked closely with Yousuf as his business manager, researcher, and model—an essential partner in both his life and his legacy.
