First Baptist Church, Washington DC, home church of President Carter

On my walk in Washington this summer, I discovered First Baptist Church of Washington, D.C., home church to President Jimmy Carter.

 President Carter joined the church on the first Sunday of his presidency on January 23, 1977, along with his wife Rosalynn.

President Carter taught Sunday school and said this about his time at First Baptist, “You have made our lives normal lives,” he went on to say “You have given us stability in a position that is inherently sometimes unstable. A President of our country can be an isolated person. You have taken us in, and we are indebted to you. Thank you very much.”

President Jimmy Carter turned 100 years old on October 1, 2024 and died December 29, 2024.
