A moving and appropriate memorial honouring women who served and fought for peace in Vietnam and beyond

A Moment at the Vietnam Women’s Memorial

On a recent walk through Washington, D.C., near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, I came upon a striking bronze statue — a quiet but powerful tribute to the women who served during the Vietnam War.

The Vietnam Women’s Memorial, dedicated on November 11, 1993, honours the 265,000 military and civilian women who served around the world during the conflict. It remains the only memorial on the National Mall devoted exclusively to military women.

Surrounding the statue are eight trees, each one representing a woman whose name appears on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall — a subtle but profound reminder of the lives lost.

On this particular day, the statue had been adorned with fresh white roses. At its base, someone had left an assortment of hair elastics and bracelets.
