Glen Hansard: one of the most moving funeral recessionals one could witness

The funeral for Oscar-winning Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard took place on Tuesday, August 4, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin on a warm summer afternoon.

Having been involved in many funerals throughout my lifetime, including countless processionals and recessionals, I can say that Glen’s was among the most emotionally moving I have ever witnessed. His wicker casket, with a beautifully made floral spray of wild Irish flowers, moss, foliage, and brambles, was different from the more traditional flowers used.

It was a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much of himself to others. Glen was widely admired by charities for his tireless fundraising on behalf of people experiencing homelessness. In 2010, he began the now-traditional annual Christmas Eve busk in Dublin city centre, bringing together celebrated musicians including Bono, Sinéad O’Connor, and Shane MacGowan in support of those in need.

As one charity so eloquently expressed:

“Glen’s talents will indeed be his legacy, but so too will his commitment to social justice. We will be forever indebted to him for the difference he made in the lives of the people we serve.”
