IHS and what does it mean?
On my Easter walk through the cemetery, I observed many inscriptions on monuments with the symbol “IHS” and wished to know more of its historical significance.
I learned “IHS” is the first three letters of the name Jesus in Greek. It was also the symbol dating back to the early Church, and was used as a secret code to identify Christians.
Others interpreted the letters to mean “In His Service” or “ In His Steps”. Either way, Happy Easter.
