Caring students at Saint Ignatius High School volunteer as pallbearers

As the world often feels marked by disorder and confusion, I feel it’s important to shine a light on the goodness in people and the kindness they show one another.

At Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio, students have been doing something truly special for more than 22 years. Through a unique service ministry, students volunteer as pallbearers, helping to provide dignified funerals for the homeless, veterans, and those without family. Each year, they attend 150–180 funerals, ensuring that no one is forgotten.

At the start of each school year, students receive training to serve as pallbearers at funeral homes, churches and cemeteries. They carry caskets with care and reverence and offer prayers for the deceased. Their compassion ensures that every person is honoured.

These acts of kindness and service from the next generation are truly inspiring. Well done to theology teacher Jim Skerl, who recognized the need in 2003 and whose vision continues to shape students today and hopefully in the future.
