The churchyard cemetery where Paul McCartney and John Lennon hung out, drank, smoked and dreamed as teenagers

St. Peter’s Parish Church (1878), Woolton, Liverpool is where John Lennon first met Paul McCartney on July 6, 1957, when Lennon’s band, The Quarrymen, played a church event. The two teenagers were often seen sitting on the stone fence or drinking and smoking behind the very high monuments so a passersby wouldn’t see them.

Nearby is the headstone of Eleanor Rigby, who died in 1939—the same name as the hit song “Eleanor Rigby.” McCartney said the name was a coincidence, though some people doubt that.

Lennon jokingly called the graveyard a “bone orchard.” It also contains the grave of his uncle, George Toogood Smith.
