Reflection

I recently participated in the burial of two people whose remains were declared “unclaimed.” Sadly, we live in a world where more and more people are living longer but outliving their family members. Others come to a big city and lead quiet, often unnoticed lives.

The elderly and those living with mental illness in big cities face a heightened risk of social isolation and profound loneliness. City life often disrupts the close-knit, support systems (church, service clubs, etc.) that once helped hold communities together. The fast pace of urban living can make it difficult for individuals to form and sustain deep, meaningful relationships.

I don’t know the cause of their deaths, nor the state of their health or hearts in their final days. But we made sure to pause — to stand together in silence and in thought. In that brief moment, it felt important to simply be present, to give thanks, and to acknowledge that they mattered.
