Two sports media legends buried near each other at Toronto’s historic St. James the-less Cemetery

Buried just metres apart in the Rosedale Valley section of St. James-the-Less Cemetery in downtown Toronto are two influential figures in Canadian sports media.

Johnny Esaw was a pioneering CTV broadcaster, best known for his involvement with figure skating, football, and international hockey—most notably his coverage of the 1972 Summit Series.

Alongside him lies Toronto sportswriter and radio personality Jim “Shaky” Hunt. Over a journalism career spanning more than 50 years, Hunt covered many of the world’s biggest sporting events, including the Stanley Cup, the Super Bowl, the Olympics, all four of golf’s major championships, and the 1972 Canada–Russia Summit Series.
