Rick James “Super Freak”

On my walk through beautiful Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, New York, I came across the grave of funk legend, Rick James.

Born James Ambrose Johnson Jr. and raised in Buffalo, Rick James was a singer-songwriter and record producer who left an undeniable mark on music history.

In 1964, to avoid the draft during the Vietnam War, James fled to Toronto, where he formed the rock band The Mynah Birds. Though the band never released an album, it included notable members like Neil Young and Bruce Palmer of Buffalo Springfield. Unfortunately, two years later, military authorities discovered Rick’s whereabouts, and he was tried by the U.S. Military Courts and sentenced to one year in prison for desertion.

A decade later, Rick James finally broke through, signing with Motown under the legendary Berry Gordy. This partnership produced his greatest hits, including the iconic “Give It to Me Baby” and “Super Freak”, songs that have become funk staples.

After battling many personal struggles over the years, Rick James passed away from natural causes on the morning of August 6, 2004, at the age of 56.

In a testament to his lasting influence, in November 2020, James’ estate sold a 50% stake in his publishing and masters catalog to Hipgnosis Songs Fund, founded by Canadian music executive and entrepreneur Merck Mercuriadis. Hipgnosis owns over 13,000 songs by artists such as The B-52s, Barry Manilow, Blondie, George Benson, Journey, Lindsay Buckingham, Neil Young, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Steve Winwood.
