Finding Alexander Keith at Camp Hill Cemetery, Halifax

On my walk through beautiful Halifax, Nova Scotia—beer in hand—I came across the grave of Alexander Keith at Camp Hill Cemetery, just a stone’s throw from Dalhousie University.

Alexander learned the craft of brewing from his uncle up in Northern England, and in 1820, he brought that skill to Nova Scotia. Over time, he built and expanded his own brewery, which would become a local institution.

Today, Keith’s Pale Ale proudly holds the title as the oldest continuously brewed beer in North America—a true testament to Alexander Keith’s brewing legacy.

Alexander Keith died in Halifax on December 14, 1873. He was 78.

At the time of his death, his estate was worth $251,000 or about $6.3 million in today’s dollars.
