Remembering Barbara Hamilton

On a recent walk through Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto, I found the niche in the main mausoleum where the urn of Barbara Hamilton rests beside her sister, Mary.

Born in Kingston, Ontario, Barbara Hamilton was once dubbed the funniest woman in Canada. She’s perhaps best remembered for her role as the sharp-tongued Eulalia Bugle in Road to Avonlea, but her impact on Canadian theatre and television reaches much deeper.

In the early 1970s, Barbara gained international acclaim—and a Drama Critics Award for Best Actress—for her portrayal of Marilla Cuthbert in the London stage version of Anne of Green Gables. Her performance drew the attention of U.S. networks, leading to appearances on popular shows like All in the Family and The Jeffersons.

But it was Toronto’s theatre scene that Barbara called home. She was a fixture on local stages and had the distinction of appearing at the Royal Alexandra Theatre more than any other actor. Her final role, fittingly, was on that very stage, playing Mrs. Childs in Crazy For You from 1994 to 1996.

Barbara passed away on February 7, 1996, at the age of 69, after a battle with breast cancer. Her legacy lives on in Canadian arts—not just in the roles she played, but in the joy and laughter she brought to audiences across the country.
