Remembering Jeff Healey: A Musical Force from Toronto

On my walk through Park Lawn Cemetery in Toronto, I came across the grave of the great and versatile musician Jeff Healey — a man whose brilliance transcended genre, expectation, and even physical limitation.

Blind from the age of one, Jeff began playing guitar at just three years old. He developed his signature style by playing the instrument flat on his lap, creating a sound and technique entirely his own. That distinctive style propelled him to stardom in the late 1980s, and by 1989, his hit singles “Angel Eyes” and “Hideaway” were both nominated for Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

But Healey’s passion for music extended far beyond performance. He was an avid record collector, amassing a personal archive of over 30,000 vinyl albums — a testament to his deep love and encyclopedic knowledge of early jazz and blues.

Throughout his life, Healey toured extensively across North America and Europe, and remained a fixture in Toronto’s live music scene, performing regularly at his club “Healey’s” on Bathurst Street. Whether in stadiums or local clubs, he captivated audiences with soul, grit, and mastery.

Healey shared stages and studio time with some of music’s most legendary names — The Allman Brothers, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, ZZ Top, and Eric Clapton, to name just a few. His versatility knew no bounds.

Movie fans will also remember his role as “Cody” in the 1989 film Road House alongside Patrick Swayze, with whom he became close friends. One of the film’s most unforgettable scenes featured Healey and his band performing behind chicken wire, beer bottles flying — gritty, raw, and perfectly in tune with his blues roots.

Sadly, the world lost Jeff Healey to cancer on March 2, 2008, in his hometown of Toronto. He was just 41 years old.
