Remembering the Titanic Victims at Fairview Lawn Cemetery, Halifax
During my walk at Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, I visited the solemn resting place of 209 victims of the Titanic disaster. They were laid to rest here following that tragic morning on April 15, 1912, at 2:30 a.m.
The “unsinkable” Titanic departed on her maiden voyage on April 10th with approximately 2,200 passengers aboard. Just four days later, she struck an iceberg south of Newfoundland. The ship sank in just 2 hours and 40 minutes, and only around 700 people managed to escape on lifeboats to safety.
Halifax was called upon to assist in the grim task of recovering the victims. Brave Maritimers recovered 328 bodies from the icy waters; while many were buried at sea, 209 were brought ashore and laid to rest here in Halifax.
Each grave marker is inscribed with a number — assigned when the body was found and recovered from the frigid ocean. These numbers serve as poignant reminders of those lost in the tragedy.
As I walked these sacred grounds, I paused to remember victim #206, Alma Paulson, aged 29, who drowned along with her four children. The unimaginable grief of her surviving family resonates deeply in this quiet place.
