King Harald V of Norway: A state funeral fit for a king

King Harald V of Norway died on August 28, 2026, in Oslo, at the age of 89. The country lost a deeply popular monarch who had reigned since 1991 — over 35 years — making him Europe’s oldest reigning monarch at the time of his death.

King Harald V was no ordinary king. He successfully brought Norway’s monarchy into the 21st century, making it more accessible and relevant to modern life.

Widely praised as a unifier, he publicly supported marginalized groups, including the LGBTQ+ community and migrants, and was affectionately viewed as a grandfatherly figure for the nation. He provided steadiness during turbulent times and comforted citizens through national tragedies — most notably the July 22, 2011 terror attacks, the deadliest atrocity in Norway since World War II, in which a right-wing extremist shot and killed 69 people, most of them teenagers, at a Labour Party youth camp.

It was felt by many that the sensitive, deeply personal way King Harald guided a grieving nation through that tragedy was a defining moment and one in which Norwegians truly felt they had found their “People’s King.”

What many outside of Norway don’t know is that King Harald V was a great sailor and participated in three Olympics while he was still Crown Prince before ascending to the throne in 1991.

1964 Tokyo Olympics — 5.5 Metre class

Sailing aboard Fram III. Finished 8th place. He also carried the Norwegian flag at the opening ceremony.

1968 Mexico City Olympics — 5.5 Metre class

Sailing aboard Fram IV. Finished 11th place.

1972 Munich Olympics — Soling class

He switched classes ahead of these Games, training under legendary Danish sailor, Paul Elvström and finished a disappointing 10th place.

On September 9, 2026, a State funeral in Oslo, Norway was held while a nation and the world came together to honour “the People’s King.”
