Parisians are being offered the chance to win a burial spot among some of history’s most famous artists…

The City of Paris has launched an unusual lottery aimed at restoring neglected grave monuments in its overcrowded historic cemeteries: Père-Lachaise, Montparnasse and Montmartre.

So what’s the offer?

City authorities have identified 30 graves in urgent need of repair—10 in each cemetery. Each grave is being offered for about C$6,500, on the condition that the winner fully restores the monument and secures the right to a burial plot beside it.

But there’s a catch.

Lottery winners will have just six months to restore the dilapidated gravesite, working exclusively with approved stonemasons. Only after the restoration is completed will they be eligible to purchase their own grave at an additional cost of roughly C$28,000.

It’s a princely sum for some—but for others, the chance to rest eternally beside cultural icons such as Edgar Degas, Chopin, Edith Piaf, Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Samuel Beckett, may be worth every cent.
