When someone dies in Victoria, Australia and no next of kin can be found — then the State Trustee becomes responsible.

Since 2007, thousands have been buried at Old Ballan Cemetery in Victoria that State Trustees have been using to inter the people who have nowhere else to go.

Each funeral is attended by four pallbearers unknown to the deceased and together they recite the “Lords Prayer”. They didn’t depart alone.

A simple white cross marks the grave of the forgotten.
