Two remarkable doctors, mother and daughter Emily Stowe and Ann Stowe-Gullen

On my visit today to Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto, I visited the columbarium of Dr. Ann Stowe-Gullen — Canada’s first woman to graduate from a Canadian medical school.

A remarkable woman, Dr. Ann Augusta Stowe-Gullen worked alongside her mother, Dr. Emily Stowe (buried near Tillsonburg, ON.) to establish the Ontario Medical College for Women, which would later evolve into Women’s College Hospital.

The Woman’s Medical College officially opened on October 1, 1883, offering women access to medical education at a time when such opportunities were nearly nonexistent in Canada.
