Born into a respectable farming family near Alliston, Ontario, Theodore was only nine months old when his father was killed in an accident involving a runaway team of horses. His mother raised him with the help of her parents until her death when he was 15.

The young orphan would go on to establish a grocery empire with his friend and business partner, Milton Cork.
