Carmen Bush “The Baron of the Pits”
On My Walk: Honouring the Godfather of Toronto Minor League Baseball – Carmen Bush
On my walk through Mount Hope Cemetery in Toronto, I discovered the grave of a true pioneer of minor league baseball in this city — Carmen Bucchiarello, better known as Carmen Bush, the “Godfather” of youth baseball in Toronto.
Born in Toronto in 1912 to Italian immigrant parents, Carmen’s surname was Anglicized early in life after his father was advised by construction coworkers to do so for better acceptance in Toronto society — a common story for many immigrant families of the era.
A natural-born leader, Carmen attended De La Salle High School and, by age 15, was already a standout pitcher for the St. Francis Bantams, who captured the Ontario Championship in 1927. His talent carried him to the prestigious Nickel Belt League in Sudbury, and remarkably, he continued pitching well into his 40s.
In a symbolic farewell to his playing career, Carmen famously threw his cleats over the Bloor Viaduct after his final game — but his involvement in baseball was far from over.
Carmen Bush’s real legacy began after he stepped off the mound. He was instrumental in founding the Toronto Minor Baseball Association and the Toronto Baseball Association, dedicating more than 50 years as a volunteer, coach, umpire, manager, and administrator. His impact extended far beyond the field, shaping the lives and careers of countless young athletes.
Carmen began his community service as a volunteer and eventually rose to become Athletic Director of the Columbus Boys Club. Among those he coached were NHLers Bill Quackenbush, George Gee, and Sid Smith, along with CFL greats Bill, Frank, and Annis Stukus, and future Blue Jays scout Jim Ridley, who played on Bush’s city-champion teams in 1961 and 1962.
Known affectionately as “The Brain” and the “Baron of the Pits,” Carmen was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985 — a well-deserved recognition of a life committed to sport and service.Carmen Bush passed away in Toronto on December 5, 2001, at the age of 89.
