Discovered at Bowmanville Cemetery, Ontario
On my walk at Bowmanville Cemetery, just about an hour east of Toronto, I discovered the final resting place of Tom Gibney, the familiar face of CFTO news for nearly three decades.
Born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Gibney anchored the news from 1973 to 2001 at CFTO’s studios near Hwy. 401 in Agincourt. His long and steady presence rivaled the legendary Lloyd Robertson’s ironman run as a national news anchor. Together, they helped keep CTV and CFTO untouchable in news ratings for years in Canada’s largest media market.

Many also remember Tom as the host of Lotto 6/49, where he read out the winning numbers, heightening the suspense as the lottery balls tumbled from the drum.
Tom Gibney died in Oshawa, Ontario on April, 5, 2021. He was 84.
