A coywolf sunning itself by a gravestone on a cold but sunny day

On my walk at St.John’s, Norway Cemetery in east-end Toronto, I discovered a coywolf sunning itself on a bright November afternoon beside an old gravestone.

I learned that the Coywolf occasionally emerges from its den at the back of the cemetery grounds and wanders safely throughout the area.

This fascinating hybrid is a mix of coyotes and eastern wolves, and sometimes even domestic dogs. In recent years, Coywolfes have become remarkably successful predators, adapting with ease to habitats in and around cities-like Toronto.

David Suzuki and his show The Nature of Things used St. John’s Norway Cemetery as a filming location for parts of the episode “Meet the Coywolf,” which first aired in February 2013.
