“Chopping Block” the mystery behind the grave of William Morison

On my walk at St. Mark’s Anglican Churchyard, Niagara on-the-Lake, Ontario, I discovered the flat grave stone of British loyalist and magistrate, William Morison.

Most believe that when the Americans occupied Niagara in 1813 they discovered William’s grave and took offence to the anti-American wording inscribed on the monument and soon defaced it using cleavers.

Others believe that the flat grave was a perfect chopping block to cut meat or possibly used to perform amputations on wounded soldiers during battle.
