Scattering Ashes at the family cottage

“Having my morning coffee while watching two loons drift along the lake, I found myself wondering — could my ashes one day be scattered here?”

Typically, ashes can be scattered on private property you own, or on someone else’s land with the owner’s permission. It’s also usually allowed on Crown land, including most provincial or territorial parks and conservation areas, and in waterways like lakes, rivers, and oceans that are publicly managed.

That said, it’s always wise to check with local authorities, as municipal or county regulations may apply — especially if you have a specific lake in mind.
